What Is SD-WAN?

Software Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) is a virtual WAN architecture enabling enterprises to leverage any combination of transport services. To elaborate, this includes MPLS, LTE, and broadband internet services, and securely connects users to corporate applications.

Strategic Communications’ SD-WAN platforms use a centralized control function to securely and intelligently direct traffic across the WAN. In brief, this increases application performance, resulting in enhanced user experience, greater business productivity and reduced costs for IT.

SD-WAN vs WAN

WANs based on conventional routers are not suited for cloud environments. They typically require backhauling all traffic, including data destined to the cloud, from branch offices to a hub or headquarters data center. From there, the application of advanced security inspection services take place. The latency caused by backhaul impairs application performance resulting in a poor user experience and lost productivity. Unlike traditional router-centric WAN architecture, Strategic Communications’ SD-WAN model fully supports applications hosted in on-premise data centers, public or private clouds, and SaaS solutions, such as Salesforce, Cisco WebEx, Office365, and Dropbox. In addition, our SD-WAN continues to deliver the highest levels of application performance.

The Benefits Of SD-WAN

The traditional WAN architecture can be limiting in a modern cloud environment. Once an organization adopts cloud-based applications in the form of SaaS and IaaS, its WAN architecture experiences an explosion of traffic accessing applications distributed across the globe.

These changes have multiple implications for IT. To elaborate, employee productivity may be compromised by SaaS-application performance problems. WAN expenses can rise with inefficient use of dedicated and backup circuits. IT departments fight a daily, complex battle of connecting multiple types of users with multiple types of devices to multiple cloud environments.

With Strategic’s SD-WAN solutions, IT delivers routing, threat protection, efficient offloading of costly circuits, and streamlining of WAN network management. In addition, the benefits to IT departments include the following:

  • High availability, with predictable service, for all critical enterprise applications
  • Multiple hybrid active-active links for all network scenarios
  • Dynamically routed application traffic with application-aware routing, for efficient delivery and improved user experience
  • Improved OpEx, replacing expensive Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) services with more economical and flexible broadband (including secure VPN connections)
  • Seamless extension of the WAN to multiple public clouds
  • Real-time optimized performance for Microsoft Office 365, Salesforce, and other major SaaS applications
  • Optimized workflows for cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure
  • Application-aware policies with end-to-end segmentation and real-time access control
  • Integrated threat protection enforced at the right place
  • Secure traffic across broadband Internet and into the cloud
  • Distribute security to the branch and remote endpoints with NGFW, DNS security, and NGAV
  • A single, centralized, cloud-delivered management dashboard for configuration and management of WAN, cloud, and security
  • Template-based, zero-touch provisioning for all locations: branch, campus, and cloud
  • Detailed reporting of application and WAN performance for business analytics and bandwidth forecasting
